Singapore’s education system is renowned for its rigorous curriculum and exceptional standards. Currently, the streaming system divides students into Integrated Programme(IP), Express Stream and Normal Stream based on their performance in primary school. This has led to concerns about students being labeled at a young age and being limited in their options for further education.
Current Education Pathway
A historic shift is here. With the MOE abolishing streaming in secondary schools from 2024 onwards, the landscape is changing completely. This significant overhaul, replacing a 40-year-old framework, ensures that all students will experience a more flexible and customized curriculum known as Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB).
What Exactly Does Full Subject-Based Banding (FSBB) Change?
Starting from 2024, when local secondary schools fully implement Full Subject Based Banding (FSBB), primary school graduates will still be allocated to secondary schools based on their Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) results. Students in the first scoring band will initially take more G3 subjects, while students in the third scoring band will take more G1 subjects. However, as time progresses, students will have the flexibility to choose subjects of different difficulty levels as they discover their own interests and academic strengths.
**G1, G2, and G3 are the three bands in the new subject-based banding system. G3 is the most challenging band, while G1 is the least challenging band. Students will be placed in different bands based on their subject choices and abilities.
After FSBB
For example, a student who is strong in Mathematics and Science may be placed in G3 Mathematics and G3 Science, while a student who is weaker in Mathematics and Science may be placed in G2 Mathematics and G2 Science.
Students will be able to move between bands at the end of each year, based on their academic performance. This means that students who improve academically will be able to move up to a higher band, while students who struggle academically will be able to move down to a lower band.
As Parents, How Can You Prepare Your Child?
With greater flexibility comes the need for better academic planning. Here is what you can do:
-
Talk About Interests and Abilities:
Help your child identify their strengths and weaknesses. This will guide them in choosing the most appropriate subject bands without feeling unnecessarily stressed. -
Encourage Exploration:
Don’t be afraid to let your child try new subjects. This helps them discover their passions and subjects they naturally excel in. -
Develop Good Learning Habits:
Regardless of whether they are in G1, G2, or G3, developing consistent study habits and staying motivated is the ultimate key to success.
Adapting to the New MOE Syllabus with Physics Academy
With FSBB, Students may have more flexibility in choosing their subjects and may not feel pressured to perform well in order to be placed in a higher stream. They will be able to take subjects that they are interested in and that they are good at. They will also be able to take subjects that are necessary for their future career goals.
While FSBB removes the pressure of rigid streaming, it presents a new challenge: school teachers must now adjust their methods to meet a more diverse range of learning paces within the same school. Some students may find it challenging to keep up.
In Physics Academy, we have been implementing “learn at students’ own pace and in a way that is best suited to their individual needs” since 2016 which gives all students the opportunity to learn and grow.
With Physics being a core subject in both Secondary and JC education, ensuring a solid grasp of its concepts is crucial. This is where Physics Academy comes in as your dedicated partner in academic success.
Our lesson isn’t just about theory; it’s about real-world application. Our interactive learning approach includes hands-on experiments, simulations, and practical examples, helping students connect Physics concepts to real life.

Whether your child is in Secondary or Junior College, our tutors adapt their teaching methods to cater to G1/G2/G3 level, ensuring that every student has a strong foundation to face O level (Called SEC in the future) & A level Examinations.
