WORKED EXAMPLES

EASY

The diagram below shows a mass of weight 4.0 N hanging on the end of a string. It is pulled side ways so that the string makes an angle 40° with the vertical. In this position, the tension in the string is 8.0 N. By means of a scale drawing, determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force exerted on the mass by the string.
Answer

MEDIUM

An object is pulled at a steady speed by two cables along a horizontal surface as shown. By means of a scale drawing, determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force exerted on the object by the cables.
Answer

HARD

A wooden block of mass 12 kg moves with a constant speed of 2 m/s on a horizontal floor when pulled by a force of 20 N.
a) Determine the frictional force between the block and the floor.
b) When the block is moved by a force of 68 N for 5 seconds, what is the speed of the block after 5 seconds?
